Visit to the Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC)
(1) Introduction to the Thailand Creative & Design Center
Established in 2004, the Thailand Creative & Design Center (TCDC) is one of Thailand’s leading institutions dedicated to promoting creativity and design. Operating under the Creative Economy Agency (CEA) of the Thai government, TCDC aims to advance Thailand’s creative economy and cultural industries through design, innovation, and interdisciplinary knowledge integration.
TCDC’s current premises are located in Bangkok’s historic Grand Postal Building, which officially opened as the center’s new location in 2017. The architectural design emphasizes the coexistence of historical and contemporary elements. While preserving the distinctive features of the heritage building, the renovation incorporates translucent and lightweight modern materials to create an environment that encourages creative exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
(2) Exchange Activities and Site Visit
TCDC is widely recognized as an important model for creative economy development in Southeast Asia. Its institutional approach integrates government cultural policies, support for design industries, urban regeneration, public knowledge-sharing platforms, youth entrepreneurship, and innovation education.
Through this site visit, the delegation gained valuable insights into how TCDC promotes the creative economy by integrating cultural resources, design innovation, and public-sector initiatives. The visit also provided an opportunity to explore the role of creative institutions in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural industry development, and sustainable urban revitalization (see accompanying figures).
